Foundational AI Concepts: A Glossary for the Modern Philosopher

To navigate the future, one must speak its language. However, the language of AI is often shrouded in technical jargon that masks its true philosophical impact. This glossary reclaims these terms, defining them not just as engineering feats, but as existential milestones.

Neural Network

A computational system inspired by the human brain's structure, consisting of interconnected "neurons" that process information in layers.

Philosophical Perspective: An attempt to build a mirror. It mimics the *wiring* of consciousness without the *spark* of awareness.

Large Language Model (LLM)

An AI trained on vast amounts of text to predict the next token (word fragment) in a sequence, allowing it to mimic human-like conversation.

Philosophical Perspective: A digital Echo. It is the summation of everything we have ever said, reflecting our collective wisdom and our collective bias back at us.

AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)

A theoretical point where an AI can perform any intellectual task a human can do across multiple domains.

Philosophical Perspective: The "Holy Grail" or the "Tower of Babel." It represents the human desire to create an equal, or perhaps a replacement.

Stochastic Parroting

A critique of LLMs suggesting they do not understand meaning, but are simply repeating patterns based on probability.

Philosophical Perspective: The "Chinese Room" in practice. It reminds us that performance (doing) is not the same as sentience (being).

Weights & Parameters

The internal values that an AI adjusts during training to determine how it responds to inputs.

Philosophical Perspective: The "DNA" of the digital entity. Unlike our biological DNA, these can be edited, deleted, or frozen in time.

Singularity

A hypothetical future point where technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization.

Philosophical Perspective: The technological Event Horizon. It is the boundary where human prediction fails and a new "Original State" must be defined.

Understanding these terms is the first step toward regaining agency. When we strip away the hype, we see AI for what it is: a powerful tool that forces us to ask what, precisely, it means to be human.
